Kyal Get's Clucky

"Erinsborough News", BBCi, October 2005

It’s been a difficult time for the Hoylands lately. While Steph and Max deal with the emotional roller coaster of adoption, Boyd has witnessed the miracle of birth and emerged a changed man. We spoke exclusively to Kyal Marsh who plays Boyd to get his perspective on the heart-wrenching storyline.

“It wasn’t so long ago that Boyd had a near death experience when he was in a coma with a brain tumour,” he explains. “It has given him a new perspective about how important life and family are.”

Despite the high drama, Kyal still maintains that he had a good time filming his scenes.

“Virginia, who played Kayla, was great fun, a really funny girl with heaps of talent,” he says. “Amiel who played Ashley, was so cute and a really good baby. I’ve worked with babies before and sometimes they interrupt scenes crying and stuff, but she was really quiet.”

So why does Kyal think that Boyd chose to get involved in the adoption process?

“Boyd didn’t know what to think of Kayla when they first met. But soon he started to realise that she was getting really uncomfortable when Max and Steph talked about baby names in front of her, and stuff like that,” he explains. “Boyd really feels for her because he can tell she doesn’t want to give up the baby.”

He also points out that being present at the birth had a profound effect on his character.

“Boyd was supposed to just drop Kayla at the hospital. But when he is holding her hand and she’s in labour, he doesn’t feel any conflict. He knows he’s doing the right thing, in his mind.”

Unlike his character, Kyal can see the difference between Boyd’s desire to support Kayla and the decision to step in as a father to Ashley.

“He doesn’t fall for Kayla; he falls for the idea of having a family and looking after the baby. It’s like they are his own family and he doesn’t want to see mother and daughter separated.”

Still, the good news is that the tricky storyline hasn’t put Kyal himself off being a dad some day.

“I could see myself being a dad and I’m not as afraid of it as some other guys are. It’s not my choice to have a baby now, but I would definitely like to be a young dad.”
