The Event
Times are tough for shows on Australian TV at the moment. In the past months, several shows have gone to the big TV graveyard in the sky after only a couple of episodes. And in past years there have been new series that, after much hype, have had a life span on only one year. So it is little wonder Channel 10 was prepared to celebrate the success of Neighbours, as the super soap clocks up an extraordinary 20 years on screen.
The current cast and a few familiar names from the past, toasted the show's enduring success at The Long Room in Collins St on Tuesday night. The accolades for the show were glowing. Network programmer David Mott described it as "the N in Ten," while head of drama Sue Masters gave a very relaxed speech, lauding the show as the "heart and soul, not to mention the spine of our drama schedule".
A disappointing note on the evening was the sulky performance of one of the show's younger stars who turned up, carrying what appeared to be an ernormous chip on her shoulder, and spent much of the night rubbing her nose. A little bit of grace would not have gone astray.
