Taking the Reins TV Week, Australia, 21st May 2005
From the moment he arrived in Ramsay Street, it’s been clear that Bobby Hoyland has a far-from-amicable relationship with his son, Max.
But Max (Stephen Lovatt) is forced to view his father in a new light this week.
Bobby (Andrew McFarlane) puts his own life on the line to save his grandson, Boyd, when a horse-riding trip takes a shock turn.
Early in the ride, Max lashes out at Bobby for not being there for him over the years and not making sacrifices as a father. But their heated discussion is suddenly interrupted when Boyd startles his horse and is taken on a terrifying ride through the bush.
“Boyd loses control of his horse, but Bobby catches up,” says Kyal Marsh, who plays Boyd. “In full John Wayne-style, he transfers and manages to get Boyd to safety.”
From this moment on, Kyal says, it’s clear that Bobby’s attachment is genuine when it comes to his son and grandson.
“It definitely shows that he’s devoted to his family and he doesn’t have an ulterior motive for hanging around Erinsborough,” he says. “He’s there to see his family.”
