Bowled Over by Jackie Brygel TV Week, Australia, 18th March 2006
Shane Warne pops into Ramsay Street for a visit!
Shane Warne now has another big career to fall back on should he ever decide to hang up the cricket bat for good - as a Neighbours star! The cricket legend visited the set last week to make a much-anticipated appearance as himself in the long-running weeknight series. Shane's cameo will raise money for the Shane Warne Foundation, which helps seriously ill and underpriviliged Aussie kids. And it's safe to say Shane's arrival had all of Erinsborough in, er, quite a spin! For while Shane's starring role in three scenes - which we'll be seeing on our screens in July - was brief, the spin king admits he enjoyed every minute of it. "All the cast were fantastic," says Shane. "Everyone was trying to make me feel as relaxed as I possibly could. I was a bit nervous about it in the beginning, but it was really good. I grew up watching Neighbours and now my kids do too, so it's nice to play a little cameo." TV WEEK's Jackie Brygel was on set to watch Shane's Neighbours acting debut.
Shane brought along his eight-year-old daughter Brooke and six-year-old son Jackson to watch him film his scenes. Brooke impressed the Neighbours producers so much that they gave her a role as an extra during her father's scenes!
Is there any chance we'll see Shane giving up cricket and moving to Ramsay Street on a more permanent basis? "I doubt it," he replies, chuckling. "But I really enjoyed it. It was a bit of fun. Who knows - maybe they can write me into a few more scenes!"
Neighbours veteran Tom Oliver, who plays Lou Carpenter, enjoyed working alongside Shane in the scenes. "I think he's doing extremely well," says Tom. "It was chucking him in the deep end, but he took to it like a duck to water."
Being pampered in the make-up chair makes quite a change from lathering on the sunblock on the cricket pitch!
This isn't the first time Kyal Marsh, who plays Boyd Hoyland, has met Shane. "I've seen him before at a party. He's a nice guy and it's good to say hello to him again. There's excitement on the set among the cricket fans." Stephen Lovatt and Eliza Taylor-Cotter help Kyal get Shane's signature.
Veteran Aussie actress Deborah Kennedy, who will soon be appearing on Neighbours, shows Shane some Erinsborough hospitality. Shane's gorgeous daughter, Brooke, is a huge Neighbours fan. "I'm so excited to be here," says Brooke. "I had butterflies before coming in. Natalie (Bassingthwaighte) is my favourite."
Shane confessed to Neighbours regular Stephanie McIntosh that he was suffering from a few nerves before heading onto the set. "But I just said, 'Chill out! Relax! It's all fine'," says Steph. "I told him, 'Just be yourself because that's what you're here to be'." Tom, Deborah, Stephen and Matthew all helped Shane feel at home.
