INTERVIEWS & ARTICLES
Young Lovers Elope by John Burfitt TV Soap, Australia, 12th June 2006
Like Romeo and Juliet, Ramsay Street’s teen lovers face disapproving parents who refuse to support their decision to marry. So without the approval they desperately seek, Boyd (Kyal Marsh) and Janae (Eliza Taylor-Cotter) ditch their original plans for a lavish family wedding to tie the knot in a private ceremony at an unromantic registry office, on emotional eps of Neighbours. “Boyd has always done what he wants and now, when his dad has told him not to do something, it makes him want to do it even more,” says Marsh on the Neighbours set. “But this wedding isn’t just about being stubborn. The fact is, he really loves Janae and wants to marry her. While his Dad opposes the union, it’s not about to change Boyd’s mind.”
From the moment Janae accepted the medical student’s heartfelt proposal, the couple has received no support from their friends and family. Janae’s mum Janelle (Nell Feeney) warns her 16 year-old daughter that she’s throwing her life away, while dad Max (Stephen Lovatt) has even stronger reasons for not wanting bright Boyd to settle down. While he also thinks his 19-year-old son is too young to marry, he worries that marriage will destroy his career ambitions. More than anything, however, the snooty dad doesn’t believe Janae is good enough for his son. Yet it’s only when just one person RSVPs to their wedding that the teenage sweethearts appreciate how strong the opposition is to their nuptials. As Janae questions whether they should proceed with the wedding at all, Boyd becomes more determined than ever to marry, but refuses to do so in front of a crowd that’s convinced that their relationship will never succeed. “Boyd decides that, if no one can be happy for them, they should run away and elope.”
With only Janae’s sister Bree (Sianoa Smit-McPhee) and Boyd’s sister Summer (Marisa Siketa) in tow, the couple rushes off to a local registry office to be joined in matrimony. While it’s not the most romantic setting for such a special occasion, they’re thrilled nonetheless. “At this point, all they want is to be together. Boyd has married the girl he loves and that’s all that matters to him.” After they are pronounced husband and wife, Boyd grabs his new bride and kisses her as their siblings look on teary with joy. But tears of a different sort will be shed in the days to follow when the newlyweds’ parents discover what they’ve done and attempt to destroy the legal bond that has just been sealed.
