Gangsters' Paradise! by Jason Herbison Inside Soap, UK, 7th January 2006
The cast of Neighbours ring in the New Year in gangster style – and this is one party that will end with a bang...
With a cast of more than two dozen characters, it’s not easy to get so many regulars in the same place at the same time for a photograph. So when Neighbours producers finally managed to round up everyone for this year’s annual snap’s, they decided on an extra special theme – the world of 1920s gangsters!
“It’s fun to get dressed up once in a while,” says Natalie Bassingthwaighte, who plays Izzy Hoyland in the soap. “Last year was huge for Neighbours, what with the 20th anniversary celebrations and all the drama which came with that. It’s nice when we all get together and have fun.”
Behind the scenes the photo call was a bittersweet occasion for three cast members who will be written out of the soap next week – in dramatic style. Inside Soap has already revealed that the plot will see several characters take to the skies for a joy-flight, which explodes over the Tasman Sea, between the mainland of Australia and the island of Tasmania.
As a newcomer to Erinsborough, Elle Robinson is one of the passengers who looks certain to survive the tragedy. “The joy-flight also has a theme – the 1940s,” says Pippa Black, who plays Elle. “It was awesome fun getting dressed up, and there’s lots of tension between the characters. Nobody is happy to be there, as the flight commemorates 20 years of Lassiters, which is run by Paul Robinson – the most hated man in Ramsay Street!”
