Mad Max! by John Burfitt

TV Soap, Australia, 2nd October 2006

From the day her ran over and killed her brother Cameron, Elle promised she would exact her revenge on Max Hoyland and way she could. But even she is stunned in future eps of Neighbours, by how successful scheme to destroy his life has been. She’s pushed him over the edge and driven him insane! Max (Stephen Lovatt) insisted Cameron’s (Adam Hunter) recent death was an accident. He didn’t mean to run him down, but he has been torn over his guilt for killing another human.

Elle (Pippa Black) still isn’t convinced he has suffered enough. She sets up a succession of malicious acts, including the temporary kidnapping of his baby Charlie, and Max begins to question his mental health. His outbursts at the strange events shock those close to him, and forge serious cracks in his marriage to Steph (Carla Bonner). Max suspects Elle might be up to something and hires a private investigator to follow her. But when the PI’s report clears her of any suspicion, he is thrown into a disturbing spiral of self-doubt. “I think I’m losing it, and I don’t know what to do,” a terrified Max confesses to his wife. “Steph, I think I need help.” She reassures him that all he needs is peace and quiet, but Max isn’t convinced.

He signs himself in for voluntary psychiatric care at the local clinic and hopes it will help, but the medical care only results in unravelling his mental state completely. Steph visits him, and she finds that her husband had been replaced by a shattered shell of a man. She attempts to take the man she loves I her arms, but Max won’t even be touched and crawls away. When he finally has a session with a psychiatrist, the doctor isn’t convinced Max is mad at all. The doctor discounts any sign of mental illness, saying this behaviour is normal for a man under intense stress. “You don’t know what you’re talking about” Max screams. “What do I have to do to get some help around here?”

Steph then visits the doctor to discuss the troubled man’s condition, and Max overhears every word as his wife confesses her doubts about the state of their marriage. Later, alone in his room at the clinic, Max believes everyone is against him. “I’m stuck in here now, and I’ll never get out!” he screams. Enraged at what his life has become, he flies into a fury and tears the room apart. When Steph and his son Boyd (Kyal Marsh) learn of what has happened, they confront the doctors and claim Max’s condition deteriorated from the moment he entered their care. The doctor explains Max is only letting out what he has bottled up for ages, but Steph isn’t convinced.

She set out on a mission of her own to get her husband home and into her care. Max learns what she is trying to do, and fears of the danger he could cause himself or his family. He decides he must disappear until this period of madness comes to an end.

Once Steph leaves the clinic, Max begins planning his escape. Then, later in the day, he slips away and calmly walks off into the distance. His belongings are found abandoned at a bus stop, and Steph can’t believe it. Not only has her hubby walked out on her and his family. He’s walked out on his own life!
