Rocked to the Core TV Week, Australia, 30th December 2006
There’s no clean slate for these residents as they ring in the New Year
Last year we bade farewell to on of our all-time favourite Ramsay Street vixens, Izzy Hoyland. We also discovered, at long last, the identity of the Lassiter’s plane bomber, Robert. And, of course, we cheered when Susan and Karl – who once enjoyed one of Erinsborough’s longest and most loving marriages – finally reunited. But all of these developments will pale into significance compared to what’s in store for our favourite Neighbours! Here’s our exclusive preview of what’s on the cards for 2007…
At Death’s Door
When the credits rolled on Neighbours for the last time in 2006, Toadie had been shot by Katya’s blackmailer, Guy, during a siege at the Hoyland house. While Steph, her young son Charlie, Katya and her brother, Zeke, were also caught up in the hostage situation, they managed to escape without injury. But in enabling the others to flee the house by wrestling Guy to the ground, Toadie was shot and now faces a desperate fight for his life. “These are definitely some of the most dramatic scenes I’ve ever done on the show,” Ryan tells TV WEEK. “I had to try and imagine just how intimidating it would feel to be staring down a gun. I really don’t know if the end result is how I actually would react. I think I’d be a gibbering mess really!” When the show returns, the young lawyer is rushed straight to hospital where doctors wage a frantic battle to save his life. “Toadie’s really in a lot of trouble this time,” hints Ryan. “It may not go the way people expect.” Will Toadie survive this ordeal? And if he does, how will the horrific shooting change him?
Rocky Road
Toadie has long harboured unresolved feelings for Steph, but it took his brush with death for the young mum to realise just how much he means to her. Has she left it too late to tell Toadie how she really feels? What’s more, Steph’s husband, Max – who went missing from a psychiatric hospital in 2006 – is set to complicate matters when he makes a return to Ramsay Street!
Shock Lover
No one endured a more dramatic year than Sky Mangel. After making the shock discovery that she was pregnant, the young artist quickly realised she didn’t know who fathered the child. Was it Stingray, with whom Sky had a one-night stand, or his older brother – her great love, Dylan? Months later, after giving birth to daughter Kerry in the most dramatic of circumstances, Sky finally learnt her baby’s true paternity – Dylan. But by then, her relationship with the former bad boy was well and truly over. Or so she believed. “Giving birth to Kerry was a huge moment in her life and she loves being a mum. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to her – Kerry’s her lifeline,” Stephanie says. Adds Neighbours producer Peter Dodds: “Sky had such a difficult journey in 2006 that, really, anything could happen to her in 2007.”
In the final weeks of Neighbours for 2006, Sky and Dylan shared one more kiss – only to discover the fireworks between them had fizzled out. “She did a U-turn and realised she and Dylan are great mates and are going to be great parents, but there was no love anymore,” says Steph. “That was a very big realisation for her.”
But 2007’s shaping up to be just as colossal, and TV WEEK can reveal that she finds love once more. And you simply won’t believe whom she falls for this time! “Her happiness will come from the most unexpected source,” Peter reveals. “It’ll be a surprise, but once it happens, I think people will understand why,” adds Steph. Regrettably, Steph hints, the new red-hot romance “may not last as long as Sky hopes”. Adds the actress: “If you think there’s been drama for Sky in 2006, just wait until the start of 2007!”
As for Dylan, he was dumped by Elle before sharing that lacklustre kiss with Sky. Now, Dylan may find himself wishing he’d been a little more attentive to Elle’s needs, as he’s beginning to realise they’d be perfect for each other. But with Elle having left Ramsay Street in the season finale – unsure if she’d ever return – he may have missed his chance.
Baby Bombshell
When Izzy Hoyland farewelled Ramsay Street in September last year, she’d just discovered she was pregnant – and that former lover Karl was the baby’s father. As TV WEEK recently revealed, Izzy will return to Neighbours in the new year. Will it mean that Karl and Susan finally discover the truth about the baby? And if so, will it destroy their new-found happiness? “Izzy’s appearance in London is bound to throw a spanner in the works for Karl and Susan,” says Peter Dodds. And they say true love conquers all!
Cheating Spouse
Janae was understandably shattered when she discovered her husband, Boyd, had shared a passion-fuelled encounter with a young woman named Glenn. Needless to say, it won’t be smooth sailing for the couple in 2007. “He’s being very mean to Janae, and also to someone who comes in later who I can’t divulge too much about,” hints Kyal Marsh, who plays Boyd. “He’s very indeceisive; he’s hurting a lot of people.” At the moment, Boyd insists he’s fully committed to Janae and wholeheartedly regrets his infidelity – but it looks as though his young wife may soon have reason to doubt him again.
